New Balance was founded in 1906 in Boston and initially specialized in orthopedic shoe insoles. It was not until after 1960, following the sale of the company by William J. Riley's daughter Eleanor, that the first running shoe was created. With the sale to Jim Davis in 1972, the company gained increasing attention and now employs 5,000 people, with shoes sold in a variety of designs in over 120 countries.
