New Balance was founded in 1906 in Boston and initially specialized in orthopedic shoe insoles. It was not until after 1960, when the company was sold by William J. Riley's daughter Eleanor, that the first running shoe was created. After being sold to Jim Davis in 1972, the company gained more and more attention and now has 5,000 employees, with shoes sold in a variety of designs in over 120 countries.
